The weather finally cooperated for a comfortable evening in Brooklyn as the Spring Pétanque League’s first challenges got underway. The night got off to a tentative start with a couple of slim victories and a pair of ties in the first round. But, when all was said and done, a clear front-runner had emerged. Carreau-No-Virus cruised to a stunning 7-1-2 record on the strength of dominant performances from Kyra and Christina who sit atop the individual leaderboard with 3 wins apiece. Shuchi, Adam, and Chip turned in solid performances, as did Dana who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a last minute, late round carreau!

Panchito had a comeback performance going 4-3-1 on the evening, good for second place in the overall standings. Coach Kasia was under the weather but Garrison kept the trains running as the team prevailed on the back of breakout efforts from Sam, Tori, and Aubrey.

Fielding a short-handed team, Boules Deep was in deep trouble and nothing seemed to go their way. Their record did not reflect the effort as half of their games were decided by 2 points or less. They are down but not out thanks to some strong showings from Jess, George, and Woody. Underestimate this team at your peril.

In ironic news, Team Won continued their losing streak and find themselves dead last in the standings for the time being. Despite Ernesto going 2-0 for the night and a convincing shutout from David S. and Nina, this team’s winning personality didn’t translate into a winning night. Nonetheless, team spirit and player morale is off the charts and it remains to be seen if their underdog status and liquid courage can lead them to victory next week.

One thing is for sure: things are just warming up this Spring at the Carreau Club. There is plenty of action to come and a long way to go before the league championship…See you on the courts!!
