Summer 2021 — Week Five
It was another lovely summer evening in the courtyard as we settled in for the fifth night of competition in our Monday night pétanque league. We’re halfway through and so far the energy seems to be a little too overwhelming for The Incrediboules to handle. They were able to hold their own in the first frame, walking a way with an even split but it was downhill from there as they were only able to squeak 2 more wins from the evening. Coach Ernesto was on fire for the evening, going 3-0 including solid wins with Jess and Steve. It was also a perfect 2-0 program for up-and-coming rookie Adrian, certainly one to watch going into the second half.
But even these dominant performances couldn’t stop that Big Boule train once it got moving. Once again, it was a team effort with every member of the squad declaring multiple victories. Coach Aaron has had mixed results all season long but went 2-0 for the evening and could be hitting his stride (you’d really expect him to be better considering he plays pétanque literally every day!). Garrison and Deacon (currently atop the individual leaderboard) each turned in solid 2-1 performances while Maria and Marco were feeling the 90s vibes and crushing their opponents all evening long. They each went undefeated for the night at 2-0 and led BBE to another lopsided Monday crusade.
There is plenty of league left to go but if The Incrediboules don’t get their act together soon, this season might start to slip away from them. Tune in next Monday to see if they can answer back or if they go quietly into the night…
MONDAY WEEK FIVE RESULTS
*************
This Tuesday, the League Commissioner decided to shake things up a little bit by introducing a mixed “melee” tournament, dubbed the “Summer Classic”. With just the right number of league members on hand, we put together eight triplets made up of members of three different squads. An opportunity to get to know everyone a little better, get some advice from the other coaches, and see how it feels to match up with your enemies and play against your own squad. Safe to say that this was a blast and will be a continuing part of our leagues here at the club!
In the preliminary round, Jeff, Adam, and Debra were leading Team Ernesto the entire way, threatening to knock them out of the Concours but they couldn’t quite seal the deal and lost a close one at 11-10. Dana, Ian, and Derek dropped an 11-3 hammer on Team Hugue, sending them straight to the Consolante bracket. According to his teammates, Ian (who is climbing the individual leaderboard) was pointing 100% on the cochonnet throughout the match! Good vibes and solid team chemistry led to a win for Paul, Anne, and Lauren who handed Kasia an unusual tournament loss. Kyra, Nina, and Jess M. seemed to have difficulty gelling and fell to Team Woody in the opening salvo.
In the Consolante bracket, Hugue, Tori, and David R. advanced to the finals seemingly without a fight. So, too, did Kasia, Cathy and Brendan make short work of their semi-final opponents. The final match was a spirited contest but ultimately Team Kasia came through for the victory. One coach, one intermedio, one rookie…a solid team, perhaps one for the ages!
In the Concours bracket, Team Ernesto and Team Woody delivered decisive victories, setting up an historic match between buddies and bizness partners with honor and reputation at stake. This “Dog On A Horse” final was well fought throughout but Woody, Trish, and Zach were relentless competitors and scored the upset win. Big ups and congratulations to them on going undefeated for the day to take home the very first Carreau Club Summer Classic trophy!! Allez baby!!
