Summer 2021 — Week Four
It was clear skies and comfortable temps on Monday evening as the league got underway. But nothing could stop the dark cloud from forming over the Incrediboules and their hopes for a winning season. After handing it to BBE last week, they thought they could lean back and cruise control their way to pétanque glory. Big mistake. Huge. The energy was on full display and the BIg Boule crew overwhelmed with stunning victories throughout the night, ultimately going 8-4 in three rounds to solidify their top spot in the standings.
Perfect performances from coach Kate (3-0), newcomers Philip (3-0) and Deacon (2-0), and recently emboldened tournament superstar Garrison (2-0) contributed to a dominant night on the courts. Kudos, also, to Ryan, Clayton, Maria, and Marco — all of whom won 2 games for the night. This was truly a team effort and with an ensemble as strong as this, it will certainly take an incredible effort to dethrone the current top dogs.
But there are signs of life on the other side of the court. Chris and Steve each went 2-1 for the evening, grabbing some spots on the leaderboard and pacing the race for Rookie of the Year. And, Jess, Adrian, Dana, and William each scored key victories throughout the night, preventing a total sweep. This team is tenacious and, at times, clutch. No doubt, they will be back next week with a vengeance, looking to settle the score.
MONDAY WEEK FOUR RESULTS
*************
Absences were deeply felt on all sides as folks settled in for a midsummer’s league night on Tuesday. Over on the 34th Street side of the courts, Team Too was missing their intermedio allstars, Nina and Derek and for the first time since the team’s inception, they were clearly not having any fun. They claimed only one victory for the evening, an 11-1 blowout delivered by Paul, Trish, and David S. who shined extra bright with his family in the stands cheering him on.
But this was Panchito’s night, through and through, with every member of the team delivering points and shots with precision. Coaches Aaron and Kasia were both flawless for the evening, earning tops spots on the current individual leaderboard. Meanwhile, the “Anne Crew” was in full effect with their fearless leader, Anne herself, and compadre Ian both turning in perfect 3-0 performances for the evening. Clutch and consistent play from Zach, Tori, and Sophie rounded out the team effort which landed Panchito in first place at 11-5-1 with barely a team in their rearview mirror.
Over on the Building 5 side, 2B2D was missing half of their team, including both coaches and several players key to team morale. The remaining squad kept it together against a tough C-N-V team but were only able to muster a pair of victories for the evening. Debra was an especially bright spot for the deep peeps, with a decisive victory in the first frame alongside Brendan, and another in the third with coach Woody and J-Money herself, Jess H.
Carreau-No-Virus just won’t seem to go away and this week, they were definitely surging. Rookie sensation and recent tournament superstar Kyra went 3-0 on her way to a perfect evening on the courts. Two of those victories came alongside coach Kate who likewise went undefeated in her two games. Tiny miracle and coolest cuke in the garden, Dana, had strong outing as well, going 2-1 and squeaking out an important W in the last frame to steal the evening’s challenge and make the deep weep. C-N-V is now even-Steven, sitting pretty in second place, and poised to make upwards moves. But heading into the dog days of summer, the top dog has a bite as big as their bark and their not going down without a fight…
